Barcelona’s Olympic Legacy

Barcelona's Olympic Legacy

Barcelona's Transformation

The incredible transformation of Barcelona took place in the lead up to 1992 Olympic Games, and while the stories of the Games themselves often take center stage, it is the city that won. Barcelona and the 1992 Olympic Games have become the modern day model for the way to shape a city after hosting such an event, known as the 'Barcelona Model'. We will visit the two most important sites fo the Barcelona Games starting with Montjüic Hill where the Olympic Stadium and other event sites saw some of the most impressive stories and images during the Games, before visiting the Olympic Museum and seeing past attempts the city has made to host them. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to take the Port Cable Car down to the beach where you will get unparalleled views of the city finishing along the Barceloneta neighborhood where I can recommend to amazing restaurants.

Montjüic Hill

Discover Montjüic unlike in any other tour and find out its role in the 1992 Olympic Games. The main Olympic Park and site of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Olympic Museum Access

Entrance to the Joan Antoni Samaranch Olympic and Sport Museum is included in the tour. A great space to see the artifacts, photos, videos, and test out your Olympic skills.

Cable Car

Not included in the price, but I would recommend a trip in the Port Cable Car down to the beach at the end of the tour.

Easy Access

Meeting spot at the Magic Fountain at the base of Montjüic. Only a short walk from Plaça Espanya and can be reached by to metro lines (L1 & L3).

Trip Itinerary

11:00 AM - Plaça de Carles Buïgas
We will meet in the Plaça de Carles Buïgas just in front of the four pillars and behind the Magic Fountain just down the road from Plaça Espanya.
11:15 AM - MNAC
Just outside the National Art Museum of Catalonia we will see the growth of Barcelona throughout the centuries in the build up to 1992 and where the other Olympic sites lie around the city.
11:45 PM - Olympic Museum and Ring
Entrance to the Olympic and Sport Museum is included in the price of the tour. We will head this lovely space to see the behind the scene stories of the 1992 Olympic Games and visit the main sites used during the Games.
12:30 PM - Montjüic Swimming Pools
Enjoy the Mediterranean sun, beautiful city views and a drink on the secluded mountain side terrace.
13:00 PM - Mirador de Montjüic
We will finish with views of the Barceloneta and the Port of Barcelona to let us get an idea of the transformation Barcelona underwent. I recommend the option to take the Port Cable Car down to visit the Barceloneta and beachfront.

Reviews

Really enjoyed this tour with Patrick! From the start, Patrick was on top of it, with customer service. He connected early and again later to confirm booking. We needed to make a change, and he was communicative and accommodating, so we could still get the tour in. This tour is a bit different from the other more standard Barcelona tours, which gives variety during your stay. For something a little different, and in a different area, and if you have an interest in the Olympics, I would highly recommend. The tour shows you the sights in the area, the venues and the museum, a lot of which I wouldn’t even have known were there! The views are outstanding! It is a walking tour and there are some stairs, so keep in mind if walking is difficult for you. And Patrick takes good photos, if you want group photos! Patrick is personable, knowledgeable and entertaining! We greatly enjoyed this tour and can highly recommend it

This is a really interesting tour of the Olympic Park and offers a great insight into modern Barcelona. The views from Montjuic, especially coming down in the cable car, are amazing. Patrick is a brilliant tour guide - he really knows his stuff, not just on the games but also plenty on what to see and do in the city. Really recommend taking the tour.
