One of my favorite parts about the summer in Barcelona are the open-air cinemas, none are better than the Sala Montjüic. With a screen set right outside the Montjüic castle walls and movies playing every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until August 2nd, it is a great way to spend the evening. A concert starting around 20:45 starts the night off before the sun completely sets and the film gets rolling. This will be the 9th year of the Sala Montjüic and each year it seems to be more popular.
The price is 6.50€ per session and can be purchased ahead of time. The more popular films usually get sold out ahead of time, this year Bohemian Rhapsody (this Wednesday) has already sold out. Options to buy 3 or 5 sessions at a discounted price also exist.
Most people bring a picnic and settle in with some friends to enjoy the show, but there are also offers at the back of the “theater” for pizzas, hamburgers, and more. Taking a cab to the castle is the easiest way to get there, but there are also buses set up especially for transportation to the castle leaving from Plaça Espanya.
I am personally exited to finally see Green Book this summer, but as always I will be in attendance the last day 02/08 for the final showing. Every year it is a surprise film. Every week, leading up to the final, Sala Montjüic releases a clue on their Facebook page to give a bit of an insight. Always a good time and with free souvenirs for those who want to take the lawn chairs that are rented out everyweek.
If you are lucky enough to be in town this summer Sala Montjüic is always a fun night!
