❤️Los Amantes de Teruel “The Lovers of Terue ❤️Los Amantes de Teruel “The Lovers of Teruel” 👩‍❤️‍👨
Spain’s Romeo and Juliet being celebrated today in Teruel, Aragón.
The 13th Century story tells of two childhood loves, Diego de Marcilla and Isabel Segura.
When the Marcilla family fell on hard times and Isabel’s father forbade their marriage, Diego struck a deal that in 5 years time he would return to Teruel with the riches Isabel deserved.
After 5 years of waiting, and without a word from Diego, Isabel’s father married her to another man. Moments after the ceremony Diego returned a wealthy man, but it was soon enough.
Diego has not counted the day he made the pact with Isabel’s father within his 5 years, whereas her father had.
That evening, Diego snuck into Isabel’s bedroom and begged for a kiss 😘, saying he was dying. A god fearing woman, Isabel refused. After making one final plea, Diego died of the heartbreak 💔. At Diego’s funeral Isabel decided to give her love that one last kiss he so desperately wanted before his final breathe. Upon kissing Diego, Isabel died with her love. The two were buried side by side due to their love.
Today the entire city celebrates this now legendary tale, where everyone takes to the streets and reacts the story of The Lovers of Teruel. •

🕊Santa Eulàlia🕊 • Although the festival 🕊Santa Eulàlia🕊 •

Although the festival this year started on the 7th, the oficial day of Barcelona’s patron saint is today, February 12th. •
If you ever see a statue of a girl holding an X shaped cross in Barcelona, it’s Santa Eulàlia. Anyone know where this statue is located? •

Today at 18:30 🕡 you can catch the parade throughout the Gothic Quarter as all the giants change there name to Laia and celebrate! Making their way around the old medieval streets, they will pass by the Baixada de Santa Eulàlia. It is there they will make the floral offering 💐 and dance 💃🏻 before heading to the Plaça de Sant Jaume around 20:30 to cap off the festival!

Legend has it that in the 12th Century, Valencia, Legend has it that in the 12th Century, Valencia, under Muslim occupation, was filled with bats 🦇 •
While the Christian soldiers under Jaume I (The Conquerer) we’re sleeping 😴 before battle the next day, a surprise attack by the Muslims scared the bats into the Christian campsite 🏕 •
Waking all the sleeping soldiers who were now warned of the attack, the soldiers were able to win the battle and eventually bring Valencia into the Crown of Aragón 👑 •
With no other way to repay the bats for all they had done, Jaume I made the bat part of his emblem which had traditionally been the dragon 🐉 •
Some versions have the bat being replaced by a swallow 🐦, but maybe that wouldn’t strike as much fear into the enemies...
•
While dragons 🐲 are all over Barcelona, you will also notice bats 🦇 if you know where to look. •
Many don’t know, but Facundo Bacardí, founder of the internationally known rum, 🥃 was originally born in Sitges, a town just to the south of Barcelona.
•
He founded the company in 1862 in Cuba 🇨🇺 (a symbol of good luck there) and it is no coincidence the bat was used as the logo. •
If you visit Sitges today there is a Bacardí factory 🏭 for you to enjoy! •

December 28th is the Día de los Santos Inocentes December 28th is the Día de los Santos Inocentes (Holy Innocents Day) in Spain 🇪🇸
•
🤹🏻‍♂️It is basically April Fool’s Day. 🤹🏻‍♀️
•
This day remembers the Killing of the Innocents, an order by King Herod to have his soldiers kill all of the male children in the hopes of getting rid of Jesus. This tradition has several different origins, the most relevant being jokes parents played on their children to keep them away from Herod’s soldiers. •

The Sagrada Familia Nativity Façade houses a sculpture of a Roman soldier killing infant children while a desparte mother pleads for their innocence. •

The model for the soldier was a bar man from Tarragona, Gaudí’s home region, due to the fact that Gaudí thought men from Tarragona to have more Roman-like features. If you are visiting, look closely at his feet 🦶🏼, one has 6 toes!!
•
What jokes or pranks have you played today? Or did you fall for one?
